Research Assistants

MARINE PRODUCTIVITY

Emilio Alarcón Panichini

Mr. Alarcón is a Marine Biologist from the Universidad de Concepción. Since 2012, he has worked in the Center for Research in Ecosystems of Patagonia (CIEP), supporting a variety of research projects through field and laboratory measurements of chemical variables from the channels and fjords of the Chilean Patagonia.

At present, Mr. Alarcón is a research assistant. He organizes field work, carries out in situ measurements, and performs laboratory analyses on samples from the Chilean Subantarctic and Antarctic.

Alejandro Ávila Santis

Mr. Ávila is a Marine Biologist with a mention in Oceanography and Environmental Quality from the Universidad de Concepción. He is responsible for arranging the logistics of oceanographic cruises, where he also assists in sediment sampling.

Mr. Ávila is the Head Technician in the Paleoceanography Laboratory of the Universidad de Concepción. There, he is in charge of laboratory equipment, the cold chamber containing the marine sediment archive, sediment sample preparation, and measurements of biogenic opal.

ADAPTATION OF MARINE SPECIES

Kamilla Flores Robles

Ms. Flores is a Marine Biologist at the Universidad Austral de Chile and carried out two professional practices at the Institute of Environmental and Evolutionary Sciences of the Universidad Austral de Chile, where she participated in samplings of Antarctic marine invertebrates for the analysis of parasitic fauna.

She also worked on parasitological analyses of fish and marine invertebrates, DNA extraction and sequencing, and the analysis of population genetics data.

Oscar Mardones Grandón

Veterinarian from the University of Santo Tomas. He has devoted himself to studying the physiology, digestive activity and stress of aquatic organisms.

Alejandro Ortiz Castro

Marine Biologist at the University Austral of Chile. He has studied the physiological processes of marine invertebrates such as the feeding activity and metabolic rates.

He has worked in various research projects regarding red tide and recently, climate change, observing the physiological responses that marine invertebrates present under multiple environmental scenarios.

PLANKTON

Eduardo Menschel Aguilar

Dr. Menschel is a Marine Biologist from the Universidad Austral de Chile and holds a PhD in Oceanography from the Universidad de Concepción. He is responsible for the Laboratory of Biological Oceanography (LOCEB).

Dr. Menschel is a specialist in the analysis and species identification of microplankton from the water column and sediment traps. He is responsible for implementing mooring systems in shallow sectors as well as autonomous or automatic systems in deep sectors. He calibrates and manages different oceanographic equipment and prepares reports and publications for international journals.

Valeska Vásquez

Valeska Vásquez Lepio

Marine Biologist at the University Austral of Chile.

During 2015, she was an assistant to the Introduction to Oceanography course at the Faculty of Sciences of the University Austral of Chile and at the same time, she was in charge of the programming, installation and collection of samples from a sediment trap in the COPAS South-Austral Basal Program. Currently, she is responsible for collecting, reading and analyzing total and fractionated chlorophylls from a program in the Mediterranean Sea.

BENTHOS

Ricardo Jeldres

Ricardo Jeldres Polanco

Marine Biologist at the University of Concepcion. He is in charge of the Algal Research Laboratory (ALGALAB) at the University of Concepcion.

He collaborates on research projects related to the ecology of macroalgae and is in charge of the logistics of field and laboratory experiments, in addition to the morphological and physiological analysis of algal material. In parallel, he is dedicated to the transmission of Marine Science in schools and institutions.

Dayane Osman Schmeisser

Environmental and Coastal Management Engineer at the University of Los Lagos and Ms.Sc. in Water Resources at the University Austral of Chile.

Her research interests focus on limnology and environmental changes, freshwater phytoplankton ecology and management and conservation of aquatic systems.

Currently, she is working on the first monitoring network of high frequency measurements in the lakes of southern Chile.

Hans-Barstch

Hans Bartsch Urra

Mr. Bartsch Urra is a Marine Biologist from the Universidad Austral de Chile and a specialized diver.

He has worked for the Laboratory of Limnology and Water Chemistry at the Institute of Marine and Limnological Sciences of the Universidad Austral de Chile, sampling the physico-chemical parameters of pisciculture in the regions of La Araucanía and Los Ríos. He has also collaborated with the installation of underwater sensors and the realization of video transects and bottom suctioning in the Expedición Antártica (ECA) 53, along with the Centro IDEAL.

SOCIO-ECOLOGICAL SYSTEM

María Amalia Mellado

Anthropologist from the University Austral of Chile. She is doing her Master`s thesis in Human Scale Development and Ecological Economy at the Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences at the same university.

Currently, she participates in the program ‘Nucleo de Investigacion Accion Participante’ (Nucleus of Investigation Participant Action) (NIAP)- Southern Economies, and in the Transdisciplinary Center of Environmental Studies and Sustainable Human Development at the University Austral of Chile.

Ximena Vergara Ramírez

Geographer at the University of Chile and Master’s candidate  in Water Resources at the University Austral of Chile.

She participated in the assessment of water use in basins with limited resources in Panguipulli and was part of a project that links the concept of ecosystem services with decision-making. Currently she is working on the evaluation of various marine ecosystem services.

EW

Esmee Wesselink

Nurse from Windesheim University and graduated from the Utrecht University School of Governance, Netherlands.

She was a Laboratory Coordinator of Social Change at the Center for Sustainable Development (CEDEUS) at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and assistant of the academic work group Global Environmental CLACSO. Currently, she works as research assistant for the project Fondecyt ¨The Social Life of Energy¨.
