Dr. Iriarte is a Full Professor of the Aquaculture Institute at the Universidad Austral de Chile, director of the Graduate School (Puerto Montt branch), and associate researcher at the Center for Research in Ecosystems of Patagonia (CIEP), the program Centro Basal COPAS Sur-Austral, and the Centro Internacional LIA-MORFUN.
He has a Ms.Sc. in Oceanography at Texas A & M University (USA). He completed his PhD. in Biology and Pelagic Ecology at the University of Concepción.
In recent years, Dr. Iriarte has concentrated on studying the primary productivity of marine systems off the Chilean coast and its modulating factors (light, nutrients, stratification). His most recent research has allowed him to obtain basic information leading to an understanding of the potential effect of natural changes on the primary products of the Subantarctic, Patagonian, and Antarctic marine ecosystems.

Professor at the Institute of Marine and Limnological Sciences of the Faculty of Sciences of the University Austral of Chile.
Director of the Research Center Dynamics of High Latitude Marine Ecosystems (IDEAL) and Deputy Scientific Director of the Research Center on Patagonian Ecosystems (CIEP).
He completed his doctoral and postdoctoral fellow at the University of Bremen, Germany. During that period, he participated in expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctica, where he investigated the vertical particle flux and biogeochemical fluxes in marine ecosystems of high latitude.
Over the past decade, he has been dedicated to researching the carbon flux through pelagic food webs and exportation of carbon to the seabed and sediment in fjords and channels of the southern Patagonia of Chile.
In 2009, he was part of the international expedition Lohafex: The Last Artificial Iron Experiment funded by the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Germany, and the National Oceanographic Institute of India.

Principal Investigator of the Research Center Dynamics of High Latitude Marine Ecosystems (IDEAL) and Member of the Scientific Committee on Oceanographic Research (SCOR).
B.Sc. with a Major in Zoology at the University Austral of Chile, received his PhD. in Biology at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada, and his postdoc at the Plymouth Marine Laboratory in England.
As a member of SCOR, he is part of the research group that seeks to measure changes in oceanic biological systems, particularly how marine biota will respond against environmental changes that may come.
Throughout his career, he has dedicated himself to investigate the physiological response of marine organisms against environmental fluctuations, including both natural changes as well as those produced by man, and the effect of toxins on mollusks. He also investigated the effects of ocean acidification on behavior, physiology and ecology of seafood from an ecological and economical point of view.
