Eileen E. Hofmann

  • Profile
  • Outstanding Research

Profile

Professor at the Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography at Old Dominion University, with a B.Sc at the Chestnut Hill College. She completed her M.Sc in Physical Oceanography and her PhD in Marine Sciences and Engineering at North Carolina State University.

Her research focuses on understanding physical and biological ocean interactions, temperature control of marine populations, descriptive physical oceanography and mathematical modeling of marine ecosystems. Throughout her career, she has been a member of numerous international scientific committees, among which is the Polar Research Board.

Her recent studies have focused on the mainland of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Mark Hopwood

  • Profile
  • Outstanding Research

Profile

Postdoc within the Marine Biogeochemistry group at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research in Kiel, Germany. Dr. Hopwood completed a MSc in Chemistry at the University of Manchester (UK) followed by a PhD in Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton (UK).

His research focuses on how climate change affects the supply of micro-nutrients (such as iron, Fe) to the coastal ocean. By combining the results of research cruises, mesocosm experiments, and process studies, he aims to understand how the biogeochemistry of the ocean responds to change.

He has worked extensively in Greenland and Svalbard and now collaborates with researches at IDEAL, providing expertise in the collection and analysis of environmental samples for trace chemical analysis.

Outstanding Research

  • The heterogeneous nature of Fe delivery from melting icebergs MJ Hopwood, C Cantoni, JS Clarke, S Cozzi, EP Achterberg Geochemical Perspectives Letters 3, 200–209
  • Seasonal changes in Fe along a glaciated Greenlandic fjord MJ Hopwood, DP Connelly, KE Arendt, T Juul-Pedersen,… Frontiers in Earth Science 4, 15

John M. Klinck

  • Profile
  • Outstanding Research

Profile

Head of the “Marine Geology” section of the Alfred Wegener Institute.

His research focuses on understanding the dynamics of atmospheric-oceanic interactions in the Southern Pacific Ocean on temporal scales; climatic and oceanic variability in the Southern Hemisphere on a millennial scale along with its importance for climate links during the last glaciation; and climatic and oceanic variability in the Holocene, obtaining the highest possible resolution by using sediment archives from the Northern (Mediterranean Sea) and the Southern Hemisphere (off South America, Southern Ocean).
